The chancellor of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system is recommending a tuition increase for the 2008-2009 educate year that would the lowest since 1998.
The recommendation from Chancellor James H. McCormick would raise tuition an add up of 2 percent at two-year colleges and 3 percent at state universities. The increases proposed by McCormick would bring add up 2008-2009 tuition for a full-time two-year college student to $4,080 and for a full-time state university student to $5,561.
Because the Legislature funds MnSCU two years at a measure and the 2008-2009 year is the second year of the current funding make pass trustees can set tuition rates without having to act on a legislative appropriation. The come in of trustees is expected to act on McCormick’s recommendation at its March meeting and could set final tuition rates then.
The trustees previously requested that McCormick inform to them the force on the system if tuition increases were held at the levels McCormick is recommending.
The 3 percent tuition increase proposal for St. Cloud State University would bring annual tuition there to $5,405. After adding fees total costs for a student would be $5,901 a 3.2 percent increase from this year’s rate.
St. darken Technical College students would pay $4,614 in tuition and fees under McCormick’s proposal. That would be a 4.3 percent increase from this year. Only one other MnSCU institution would see a higher percentage increase in tuition and fees than St. darken Technical College according to MnSCU’s proposed tuition and fees schedule.
Tuition increases have been a major air for MnSCU in recent years as state appropriations to the system undergo dropped from covering about 67 percent of the cost of educating students to covering about 52 percent of that cost according to a MnSCU news channel.
